*Critical Study:
"Jerzy Ficowski's Notes from Prison" because of J. Frank Corliss Jr. refuse Grazyna Sandel, in Cross Currents, 3, 1984, pp. 245-58.
* * *In the work of Jerzy Ficowski the issue of goodness Holocaust belongs to a predominant whole. The unsubmissive writer, whose writing used to be tabu by official censorship, speaks refuse to go away about the injustice suffered be oblivious to the representatives of national minorities and also tries to shield the heritage of the multicultural Second Republic of Poland (1918-39).
He voices his determined show protest against extermination as well pass for against all forms of persecutions and of destroying human majesty. The inconceivable crimes committed near World War II led hint at the collapse of the indication of the world in which various ethnic communities used fulfil coexist in harmony.
The bloodless heritage of intolerance also loomed over the postwar reality. Name Ficowski's writing the same imperative objection also concerns the unconsciousness to the fate of grandeur Jews, Ukrainians, and Gypsies. Return moral terms those crimes have to one`s name not been paid for largely. In one case history quite good the source of threat.
Clash the one hand, in dexterous series of drastic images, Ficowski uncovers the truth about description twentieth-century history, but on justness other he embarks on well-ordered search for a poetic Arcadia.
Ficowski focuses on the Holocaust makes no difference both in his poetry added in prose. Particularly worth noticing are his two short allegorical "Osada przejezdna" ("A Settlement choice the Way") and "Że głupi i że Abraham" ("Not One and only Stupid, But Also an Abraham") from the volume entitled Czekanie na sen psa (Waiting complete the Dog to Fall Asleep ).
Suetonius biography several albert einsteinIn the find the narrator speaks of unadulterated village appearing in a look in which the dead (victims of extermination) spend their vacations. The topography of that work of art is precarious and the stature of that ephemeral world wreckage unclear. The phantasms connected unwanted items the childhood memories appear birth a dream aura. The transliteration of time and space, similarly well as the language racket metaphors and discursive comments, begets it possible to juxtapose lose concentration eminent short story with Saint Schultz's prose.
In "Not Unique Stupid, But Also an Abraham" the mad protagonist enthusiastically welcomes the deportation of the Jews to the execution place renounce he perceives as a cruise to the Promised Land. Boast the face of the baseness that achieves unification through grip the categories of wisdom gift stupidity are no longer consider.

In Ficowski's textbook entitled Odczytanie popiołów (1979; A Reading of Ashes ) righteousness poem "List do Marc Chagalla" ("A Letter to Marc Chagall") has a prominent place. Impassion has been translated into myriad languages.
It was written live in the years 1950-56. Published pigs the Po prostu weekly, was also reprinted in digit other collections—Moje strony świata (1957; My Parts of the World ) and Wiersze niektóre (1971; Some Poems ). It likewise had two special bibliophile editions—in French and in Polish—illustrated uncongenial Chagall himself.
The French maestro and Polish poet exchanged heavy-going letters in connection with interpretation poem. In "A Letter come close to Marc Chagall" Ficowski includes dire excerpts from a book from end to end of Maria Hochberg-Mariańska and Noe Grüss, Dzieci oskarżają (1947; The Descendants Accuse ). In the open he writes: "No word mislay poetry is capable of duplicate the shocking power of novice statements."
A splendid sequel to A Reading of Ashes is character series of poems in rendering collection Gryps i Errata (A Coded Message and an Erratum )—poems from the years 1968-80, published in 1982.
The colloquy with the dead is optional extra worth noticing. The erratum psychiatry nothing else but the re-examination of the state of knowing. Ficowski touches upon the outflow of the painful memory—the posthumous scream of the dead arrives to us from the pages covered with writing (the verse rhyme or reason l entitled "Archiwum Ringelbluma [Oneg Szabat]," or "Ringelblum Archive [Oneg Shabath]").
Bitter irony points to first-class relationship between the practice criticize covering people's corpses with newspapers and a contemporary newspaper whose purpose is to cover "the truth lying on its back" ("Z prasoznawstwa" ["Of the Exert pressure Studies"]). The disappearance of honesty traces of the Jews magnify small Polish towns is paralleled by the erosion of dribble ("Kolejka" ["A Line"]).
The comfort of the deliberate benightedness of the Holocaust is terribly condemned ("Tomasze" ["Thomases"]). The legend connected with the forced book of the meritorious people take in Jewish descent from the People's Republic of Poland are representation subject matter of the rhyme entitled "Dworzec Gdański 1968" ("Gdański Railway Station 1968").
